My Hawaii

The Rascals (initially known as The Young Rascals) were an American blue-eyed soul group initially active during the years 1965–72. The band released numerous top ten singles in North America during the mid- and late-1960s, including the #1 hits "Good Lovin'" (1966), "Groovin'" (1967), and "People Got to Be Free" (1968), as well as "A Beautiful Morning" (#3 1968) and the lesser-known "A Girl Like You".
The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, and inducted into the Hit Parade Hall of Fame in 2010. They reunited in 2012 for a series of shows in New York and New Jersey.
1968's Once Upon A Dream was the first Rascals album designed from conception as an album, rather than as a vehicle to package their singles. The album's song "My Hawaii" became a top of the charts hit in Hawaii.

The lyrics are beautiful:
My Hawaii
(by Felix Cavaliere and Edward Brigati Jr.)

Oh Hawaii,  My Hawaii
Skies are blue,  The sea’s a thousand hues of green
In Hawaii,  Waves keep breaking
In each rise and fall, They call, For me

Oh Hawaii, Island Maui
I’ll return to fantasy and moon
All the people, On these islands
Make it more adored than paradise in bloom

There are no words to describe what is felt in your heart
When your heart has already seen the magic of all the islands

On these islands  Called Hawaii
Man awake  To find this dream divine
Oh Hawaii  My Hawaii
I’ll return to stay and spend my life
All my days     In Hawaii
Oh     Oh Hawaii
Oh

The beautiful "My Hawaii" hula

Green Rose Hula

The green rose is called the "leaf rose". Laida Paia, Mrs. James Keoni Willis, a member of John Almeida's trio composed this mele (song) although it has always been attributed to John  Kameaaloha Almeida . She was the mother of Koko Willis and John  Kameaaloha Almeida  acknowledged and always gave her due credit when he performed it, especially when Koko or other members of her family were in the audience. Confirmed by Pali Lee, wife of Koko Willis who died in 1994. Translated by Mary Pukui, Music clip by Lani Lee Blind from the age of 10, John Kameaaloha Almeida was a composer (over 300 songs), vocalist, instrumentalist, teacher, bandleader, recording artist, and recording executive.  He was truly one of the outstanding figures in Hawaiian music history and was known as the "Dean of Hawaiian Music".  Songs that he composed include Green Rose Hula, Roselani Blossoms, and perhaps his most famous, Pua Tuberose.  He had the reputation as a Casano...
