Parkin’ your Symptoms at the Door

Parkinson’s has hit close to home – with 2 family members being afflicted with this disease, it is very difficult to give into the fact that medication will make it better or easier to deal with. The truth is the meds help only somewhat. The progressive neurological disorder of Parkinson’s disease causes tremors, rigidity, a slowing of movement, and difficulty with balance. The best way to fight it, doctors say, is to keep moving.
What Aloha Allure has discovered is that through movement of the body, i.e. dance & fitness, the Parkinson’s symptoms seems to ease up and almost disappear for that moment while dancing. Case in point:
“Ice skating temporarily blocks my symptoms of Parkinson’s” says Michael J Fox.
Seeing Michael skate was like listening to a stutterer who can sing, Dr. Oz says. "It's amazing." Dr. Oz explains that fluid motions, like skating, come more easily to people with Parkinson's, than walking, which requires gears in the brain to stop and start constantly.

People with Parkinson's and dancers really have the same challenge and that challenge is about finding a consciousness in movement. I think that's one of the reasons why dance, in particular, is so valuable for them because it's a road map for how to move, not only that, it's a fun road map," says David Leventhal, a professional dancer that helped choreograph the idea of bringing dance to Bay Area Parkinson's patients.
UCSF neurologist Dr. Alec Glass says studies suggest dance versus ordinary exercise, helps PD patients regain balance and fight depression, sometimes better than medication!

What Body Type are You?

ANYONE can do Aloha Allure dance fitness - n o matter what your body type!  If you're wanting to lose weight, there is no way around it - you must do some form of exercise and cut your caloric intake. (unless of course your hormones are out of whack- that's for a different blog) For instance, i f your body type is Pear shaped aka  Meso-endomorph and you want to  lose weight in your belly  - doing a hundred sit ups will stregthen you abdominals but the horrible fact is you'll first begin to loose the weight in your  upper body,or your ankles and the last place to give up that extra poundage is the part you want the most to slim down.  I know (for me) the first place I loose weight is my face & neck, then my shoulders, followed by my waist, calves, upper hips, butt and tummy and finally the thighs. My body shape at the moment is a pear, but when I'm fit - it's more of an hour glass.  When you start any exercise program, your body goe...
