Okalani's Polynesian Revue - Don The Beachcombers






Every so often we would have to do a number that had nothing to do with the hula - such as "Star Wars" or "The Raisins"






"The Okalani Raisins" & "Luau Tonight" is a take off of 2 commercials that were big in the '80's . Here are the original commercials:










Our fearless leader Janie, thought it would be fun to do a Hawaiian take-off of these commercials and here it is:




I remember having to do this number "The Okalani Raisins" and dreading it. But now looking back, it's one of my favorites to watch - makes me smile - and I'm so glad we have it on tape to share with you. On this particular night we had Janie, Kini, Lyn-Del & Kath dancing... all of whom  have grown children of their own and I really hope their kids watch this to see how silly their mommy's were when they were younger. Fun memories!!!


All costumes for the Okalani Polynesian Revue were made my Alice Oka - she was a spectacular costume designer with great vision for stage costuming.

    Great! I worked for Dan and Alice for a few years as guitarist and vocalist for the Okalanis along with Tau, Eric, Fifi, Janie the Svoboda twins et cetera. It's good to see the footage.

Green Rose Hula

The green rose is called the "leaf rose". Laida Paia, Mrs. James Keoni Willis, a member of John Almeida's trio composed this mele (song) although it has always been attributed to John  Kameaaloha Almeida . She was the mother of Koko Willis and John  Kameaaloha Almeida  acknowledged and always gave her due credit when he performed it, especially when Koko or other members of her family were in the audience. Confirmed by Pali Lee, wife of Koko Willis who died in 1994.
